Is smoking allowed in the Maldives?
As of November 1, 2025, the Maldives officially became the first country in the world to ban smoking based not on age, but on birthdate. If you were born after January 1, 2007, purchasing, using, or even possessing tobacco products in the Maldives is permanently prohibited. This law applies to both local residents and tourists.
What is prohibited in the Maldives?
Tobacco products
- Cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco are all prohibited for those born after January 1, 2007.
- Selling tobacco to prohibited individuals is punishable by a fine of up to $3,200.
- Smoking in public places can result in a fine of up to 5,000 rufiyaa (about 25,000 rubles).
Vapes, IQOS, and electronic cigarettes
- A complete ban on the import, sale, distribution, storage, and use of electronic cigarettes and vapes—regardless of age.
- This means that even if you are over 18 and born before 2007, you cannot vape in the Maldives.
Why is the law so strict?
